Who Is a Candidate for Breast Reconstruction?

What Reconstruction Techniques Are Available?
Skin Expansion with Implant Insertion
A tissue expander placed beneath the skin and chest muscle is gradually filled with saline over weeks to months, slowly stretching the tissue to accommodate a permanent implant. The expander is then exchanged for a permanent silicone or saline implant in a second procedure. A final procedure reconstructs the nipple and areola. Tissue Flap Reconstruction
Tissue flap reconstruction uses skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the patient's back (latissimus dorsi flap), abdomen (TRAM or DIEP flap), or other donor sites to form a natural-feeling breast mound. This technique produces a more natural look and feel, and eliminates implant-related risks. Tissue flap reconstruction may be performed as a free flap (requiring microvascular reattachment of blood vessels) or a pedicled flap (tissue tunneled beneath the skin to the chest).
What Does Breast Reconstruction Recovery Involve?
Most patients are released from hospital within two to five days following reconstruction surgery. Full recovery takes up to six weeks depending on the technique used. Surgical drains are removed after one to two weeks. Some sensation in the reconstructed breast may gradually return over time.
